We are honored that you are visiting our web site. Being a religious
organization, we are always striving to find new ways to get our message out to both current worshippers of the Greek Gods
and those interested in learning about what Greek Paganism is.
We look forward to hearing from you and answering any questions you might
have. Demos Athene is an Online Temple so that modern people can follow the Ancient Greek Religion
in their modern lives easily, from anywhere in the world.
As such, the following assumptions are made:
· A
knowledge of Ancient Greek is not necessary; what is necessary is a desire to communicate with the Gods, Divinities,
and Forces of Nature in body, mind, and spirit. We have a relationship with our
Gods, and we seek to honor them by our deeds and actions.
· It
is difficult for modern people to follow an Ancient Calendar based on the moon phase in Athens. I have made a simple lunar
calendar for modern people to follow easily.
· Many
people want to follow a Pagan faith-path, but do not want to use be Wiccan; Greek Paganism, which is a continuation and adaptation
of an ancient faith, is an option for modern believers.
· It
is important to understand that some Pagan and Wiccan paths have different (and even conflicting) views of the Ancient Greek
Gods of Myth and Legend. It is also common for worshippers of the other Pagan paths to mix Gods and Divinities from different
Pantheons - even when such syncretism is not historical. While this is not wrong, it is not the practice of Hellenistic
or Hellenic Pagans. Modern Greek Paganism uses ancient sources, such as the writings of Hesiod, Homer, Apollodorus,
and Ovid to build its picture of the Deities, Demigods, and Forces of Nature. As members of the Greek Pagan Faith, we
understand that at different times, in different locations, people had different stories of the Gods. We accept this plurality
of views, as we are not interested in a pan-Hellenic Orthodoxy (right-belief, or "one true belief") but instead let the Gods,
Divinities, and Forces of Nature reveal themselves to us and seek to worship and follow them according to Greek Orthopraxy
(right action) in our daily lives.
· Reconstructionism
is an arduous path, requiring academic research, study, and is often difficult or impossible for modern followers of the Ancient
Greek Way. Persons who wish to follow the Hellenic or Hellenistic Path, but not invest all that extra work, can find one version
of what they need here. This site is NOT for "fluffy bunnies" or "pop pagans" however.
